What Is Superficial Thrombophlebitis?

If you struggle with blood clots primarily in your legs, you may be dealing with superficial thrombophlebitis. Your doctors at Advanced Vascular Associates in Morristown, Sparta, Pompton Plains, and Teaneck, NJ, are here to explain what superficial thrombophlebitis is and to help figure out what treatment would work best for you.

What is Superficial Thrombophlebitis?

Superficial thrombophlebitis is an inflammatory condition in the veins due to a blood clot. This typically occurs in the legs but can also occur in the arms and the neck. Superficial thrombophlebitis can appear in anyone but most often appears in women.

Some of the symptoms of superficial thrombophlebitis include:

  • Redness and inflammation on the skin where a vein occurs.
  • Pain in the limb the clot occurs in.
  • The warmth of the skin around the vein.
  • Tenderness and pain that gets worse with pressure.
  • Hardening of the vein.
  • Darkening of the skin.

If any of your symptoms worsen or you develop a fever and chills, it’s important to see your doctor in Morristown, Sparta, Pompton Plains, or Teaneck, NJ, as soon as possible to address any of the changes that may occur.

What Causes Superficial Thrombophlebitis?

Superficial Thrombophlebitis can be caused by several things, such as:

  • An injury to the vein.
  • A genetic blood-clotting disorder.
  • Being immobile for a long period of time.
  • Having varicose veins.
  • Being pregnant or recently given birth.
  • Having had a stroke.
  • Being overweight or obese.

If one or more of the above relates to you, it’s important to talk to your doctor to discuss strategies before going on a long road trip or taking a flight to help prevent a blood clot from forming.
