If you have pain in your pelvic region, pelvic congestive syndrome may be the cause. However, you don’t have to continue to suffer from pain and other unpleasant symptoms. At Advanced Vascular Vein Care, serving Teaneck, Morristown, and the surrounding northern New Jersey region, we can assist you with the use of minimally invasive surgery.

About Pelvic Congestive Syndrome

Pelvic congestive syndrome, also referred to as PCS, is a condition in women where varicose veins arise within the pelvic region. They swell and twist, causing pain. Not to mention, they lead to poor vein function.

If you have it, you may experience a dull, recurring pain in the pelvic area. You might have pain during menstruation or frequent backaches. You could suffer from chronic fatigue, abnormal vaginal discharge, or irritable bowel symptoms.

Pregnancy is the most common cause of PCS. Pregnancy changes the structure of a woman’s pelvis. Additionally, a woman’s body typically produces more fluid during pregnancy, which can damage the valves. Possibly, the rise in estrogen during pregnancy also leads to weakness in the walls of the vessels.

Pelvic Vein Embolization Treatment for Women

A pelvic vein embolization, sometimes referred to as an ovarian vein embolization, is a treatment for pelvic congestion syndrome. It’s a minimally invasive treatment. During the procedure, our practitioner uses imaging to guide a catheter to close the swollen veins.

Preparing for Your Procedure

We want the surgery to be as safe for you as possible. Before your surgery, we’ll discuss with you any special instructions before you undergo your procedure. Generally, this consists of stopping certain medications several days prior to your embolization. For instance, you’ll need to stop aspirin or any blood thinners.

What to Expect During Your Procedure

Typically, you’re given a local anesthetic and possibly a mild sedative. However, not everyone requires pain management for the procedure. You may be connected to an IV as well as monitoring devices that check your heartbeat and blood. You’ll be at the office for about an hour for the procedure.

When you have the procedure, our practitioner will guide the catheter – which is a thin, flexible, plastic tube. Usually, you experience little pain during this time.

After your procedure, you may have some discomfort. To combat it, we give you a pain reliever. You can expect it to take one to two days before you’re able to return to life as usual. It, however, can take anywhere between two days to two weeks before you’re able to resume sexual activity.
